I am writing this update on the train to the airport. This time I will be going to the country of my origin by myself, but I look forward to visiting Japan with my family next year.

It has been very busy lately. The OM Austria office relocation, the restructuring of the intercultural ministry core-team, and the death of three friends who passed away too early. Honestly, the sense of loss feels deeper because I was somewhat close to them.

Inevitably, I have been thinking about heaven and spending more time reexamining my life and faith on earth. Today I would like to share with you what I have been contemplating and what the Lord has taught me.

I know this is an abrupt question, but let me ask : "Why do you want to go to heaven?"

Some people may say, "Because it is a place where there is no suffering, sorrow, tears, or death." Others may say, "Because I can be reunited with my beloved family and friends." I'm sure there are many other reasons, but the bottom line is that this question explores our spirit conditions as well as our motivations deep in the heart. Thoughts that people have about heaven are generally beautiful, whether from believers or non-believers, but if we miss the points below, we are missing the mark. Before I address those points, here is another question.

"What if Jesus wasn't in heaven?" I know you are thinking this is a completely stupid question, please bear with me for a moment. There is no pain, sorrow, tears, or death. You can be reunited with my beloved family and friends. You have everything else you have hoped for in heaven. But Jesus is not there. Are you happy because you have everything you want, or are you heartbroken and devastated because Jesus is not there?

In Matthew 4:10, the Lord said, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only." To worship means to offer the Lord our deepest love, reverence, and devotion, and is an act of the heart. Worship is expressed by praising (singing), but it is more than that. Worship is everything: loving God, enjoying, rejoicing and serving God, and devoting our life to God. The Bible clearly shows that we will serve the Lord God in heaven. "No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads." (Revelation 22:3-4)

In other words, the central character in heaven is the Lord Jesus, and the Lord Himself is the biggest motivation and reason why we want to go to heaven. With this in mind, I would like to now pay attention to our faith-life on earth.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." “These things“ mean the things we need and desire in our lives. This is a familiar verse that I have read many times, but it has shone a new light on me this time. To make it easier to understand, I will replace “his kingdom and his righteousness” with "Lord Jesus Christ" and “these things” with "what you need." Seek first the Lord Jesus Christ, and all you need will be given to you.

Here is another question: “If you weigh on the scale the Lord Jesus Christ and what you need, which is heavier for you?“ In other words, for you, is seeking the Lord Jesus Christ a "means" in order to get what you need or want? Or are the things you need given to you as a "by-product" of loving, worshiping, and serving Jesus? 

What and where are our hearts? 

I often ask the Lord for my many needs and wishes. For children, family, visa, financial needs, health, ministry, salvation of people, etc. However, if my needs and wishes become bigger and heavier than the Lord, they become idols. This realization hit me very hard, as a big shock. Am I more concerned and interested to experience the miracles and healings of the Lord and to receive His blessings and grace, rather than to rejoice, enjoy, and love Jesus Christ Himself?

It is good to ask for what we need. Jesus actually told us in Matthew 7 to be persistent in asking, seeking, and knocking. But what I am talking about here is the state of our hearts, our deep motivations.

I sometimes see a slogan that proclaims the truth of the Bible: "God is enough". If Jesus Christ is not enough for us, sooner or later we will seek things from this world to fulfill our needs, which is a sin, and as a result, we will never be satisfied deep in our spirit.

"When I was a child, my dad went to Japan for work and told me many wonderful things about your country, so I became interested in it and I always wanted to go there. I wanna go to Japan on my next trip, so I'll stay around here quietly for the winter holiday and save up some money for my trip," said our friend S, jokingly. Sachi and I invited her to our apartment to cook for her a Japanese meal.

In early January, a few days before S’ planned visit to us, her family contacted Sachi and told us that S had suddenly fallen ill and was even in a critical situation. We visited her ICU room several times, prayed, talked to her in her coma, and read the Bible. Many people fasted and prayed, visited her, supported her family, and the doctors did their best to treat her for a few months. And to the surprise of the doctors, she woke up from her coma, smiled, talked, and even ate ice cream. However, a few days later, her condition deteriorated and she was all of a sudden called up to heaven. Great sadness and surprise covered our church. In the depths of grief, S’ sister-in-law shared a conversation her husband/S‘ brother had had with S, whose condition was at that time starting to improve. It was S' birthday that day, so her brother asked her what she wished for her birthday. S replied, "I want to be closer to Jesus."

S' life on earth was too short. But Jesus was certainly in her life, and through S, many people, regardless of nationality, have experienced the fragrance, peace, joy, comfort, and light of the Lord. Now, S is with the Lord whom she loved with all her heart. She enjoys the Lord’s presence, worships Him, and is filled with eternal peace. And compared to that, it seems like just a "bonus" that she enjoys a world without suffering, sorrow, pain, tears, or death, and can be reunited with her loved ones.

Jesus Christ. The Lord is our reward and prize. Our motivation and purpose. In heaven and on earth.

ここ最近は目まぐるしい日々を送っています。OMオーストリアのオフィスの移転、異文化ミニストリーのチーム再編成、地上での旅路を終えるには早すぎる3人の友人の死。普段から仲良くしていた分だけ、喪失感が深いのが正直なところです。

必然的に天国へ想いを寄せ、地上での生活や信仰を見つめ直す時間が増えています。今日は考え続けていること、主から教わったことをシェアしたいと思います。

突然ですが、皆さんは「なぜ天国に行きたいのですか？」

ある方はこのようにおっしゃるかもしれません。「苦しみも悲しみも涙も死もない場所だから。」また他の人は、「愛する家族や友達と再会ができるから」とおっしゃるかもしれません。他にもいろんな理由があると思いますが、この質問は心の深いところにある動機や状態を探るものではないでしょうか？人の心が天国に抱く思いは麗しいものですが、以下に述べる点が欠けているなら、私たちは的を外してしまっていることになります。その「点」を述べる前に、もう一つの質問です。

「天国にイエスさまがおられなかったらどうですか？」全くバカな問いだと思われた方、もう少し辛抱してください。苦しみも悲しみも涙も死もない。愛する家族や友達とも再会できた。他にも天国に期待、望むものはすべて手に入れた。でもイエスさまがおられないのです。望むものをすべて手に入れたからハッピーなのか、イエスさまがおられないので、胸が張り裂け打ちのめされるのか？

マタイ4章10節で主は「あなたの神である主を拝み、主にだけ仕えよ」とおっしゃりました。拝むとは、礼拝するという意味で、心からの行為です。礼拝は賛美（歌うこと）によって表されますが、それ以上のものです。神を愛すること、楽しむこと、喜ぶこと、仕えること、神に捧げる人生すべてが礼拝です。聖書には、私たちが天国で主なる神さまに仕えることが明確に示されています。「そのしもべたちは神に仕え、神の御顔を仰ぎ見る。」(黙示録22章3〜4節)

つまり、天国での主人公は主イエスであり、主ご自身が私たちが天国に行きたい最大の動機であり、理由なのです。このことを踏まえて、地上での信仰生活に視点を向けたいと思います

イエスさまはマタイ6章33節でおっしゃりました。「神の国とその義とをまず第一に求めなさい。そうすれば、それに加えて、これらのものはすべて与えられます。」これらのものとは、私たちの生活で必要なもの、望むものです。何回も読んだよく知っている聖句ですが、新たな光が差し込んできました。分かりやすくするために、神の国とその義を「主イエスキリスト」、これらのものを「あなたが必要なもの」と置き換えます。「主イエスキリストをまず第一に求めなさい。そうすれば、あなたが必要なものはすべて与えられます。」

ここで質問があります。主イエスキリストとあなたが必要なものを天秤にかけると、どちらが重たいですか？あなたにとって、主イエスキリストを求めることは、必要なものを得るための『手段』ですか？それとも、必要なものは、イエスを愛し礼拝し仕えていく中で『副産物』として与えられるものですか？

僕はしばしば多くの必要や願いを主に求めます。子どものこと、家族のこと、ビザや経済的な必要のこと、健康のこと、ミニストリーのこと、人の救いのことなどなど、主よりも大きくなるならば、偶像に変わります。この気づきが大きな衝撃として迫ってきたのです。イエスキリストご自身を喜び、楽しみ、愛することよりも、主の奇跡やいやしを体験したり、祝福や恵みを受けることが一番の関心ごとになってないか？

必要を求めることは良いことです。イエスさまも、マタイ7章で忍耐強く求めて、探して、たたきなさいとおっしゃりました。でも、ここでの話は、心の状態、深い動機のことです。

God is enoughという聖書の真実を謳ったスローガンを目にすることがありますが、イエスキリストが私たちにとって満ち満ちたもの、十分すぎるものとならなければ、遅かれ早かれこの世に自分の必要を探し求めることになり、それは罪であり、結果霊の深いところで満たされることは決してありません。

「幼い時、仕事で来日した父から日本の素晴らしさをたくさん聞いていたので、日本に興味が湧き、いつか絶対行きたいと思ってるの。次の旅行はジャパンに行きたいから、しばらく旅費を貯めるため、今はおとなしくしとくわ」と冗談混じりの友人Sに日本食をご馳走するために家に招待しました。

1月初旬、予定の数日前に彼女の家族から連絡があり、Sが急な病に倒れ、命の危険もあるというのです。何回かサチと一緒に緊急治療室を訪れ、祈り、昏睡状態の彼女に語りかけ、聖書を読みました。多くの人が断食して祈り、彼女を訪問し、家族のサポートをし、医師も全力で数ヶ月に及ぶ治療を施してくれました。そして、医師も驚くほどに、昏睡状態から目覚め、笑顔を見せ、会話し、アイスクリームを食べるまで回復したのです。しかしそれから数日後、容態が急変し、天国へ召天していったのです。大きな悲しみと驚きが私たちの教会を覆いました。悲嘆の底、彼女の義理のお姉さんがある会話をシェアしてくれました。Sのお兄さんが体調が回復気味の彼女と交わした時の会話です。その日はSの誕生日でしたので、何がほしいか聞いたそうです。すると、「イエスさまのもっと近くにいたい」と返ってきたそうです。

Sの地上での生涯は短すぎました。しかし、イエスさまは確かに彼女の人生におられ、国籍問わず多くの人がSを通して、主の香り、平安、喜び、慰め、光に触れました。今、Sは心から愛する主のもとにいます。主を喜び、礼拝し、永遠に終わらない平安に満たされています。そして、そのことに比べたら『おまけのような』苦しみも悲しみも痛みも涙も死もない世界を楽しみ、愛する人との再会も許されています。

イエスキリスト。主が私たちの報いであり賞です。動機であり、目的です。天国でも、地上でも。
