What to see in a person/人の中に見るもの

It’s been a month since we started our furlough/home assignment. We don’t take it for granted that we have been able to visit, without being unwell, six churches so far as planned; now three more to go. (Please pray that the Lord would heal Sachi’s two-week long stomach issue.)
Reunion with God’s family in Japan and Indonesia has brought to us comfort and encouragement. It has also given us courage that though we come from and are placed in different places, we serve the same Lord and on the same Mission.
Upon returning to Japan from Indonesia, we were saddened by the news that Mrs. A from our sending church has passed away. Mrs. A, a former flight attendant who greatly contributed to positively changing the image of Japan after the Second World War, was one of the few founding members of our sending church.
While many were still skeptical of our calling for Europe, she was one of the few that supported us from the beginning, inviting us to her home and sharing how our church has grown, taking us to a restaurant and sharing her faith journey with us.
Before departing for Indonesia, our family was able to visit her at her hospital, talk and pray for her in person, and promised her that we would come visit her again after our a-month-long furlough/church visits. The promise can no longer be realized on this side of the world, but we have now one more reason to look forward to heaven.
When I think of her, this verse comes to mind: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8
I am forever thankful for people like her who not only fought the good fight herself, but also supported others going on the same path. We feel privileged to be able to serve on the frontline of mission now, but like mentioned above, all of it wouldn’t have been possible without God’s family who believed our words and trusted us, when we first publicly proposed our mission plan and project, especially while others were still skeptical.
It gives me a lesson, in terms of how I should see people. I think, there are three ways or steps, when it comes to how and what to see in a person:
1.) How and what he/she is (Current situation).
2.) What he/she has done (Achievement).
Most of us judge others, based on these two aspects. “He seems to be a nice guy, so I want to befriend with him.” “She must be capable of such a task, because she has such and such education background and job experiences, so let’s employ her.”
But here comes another one:
3) How and what he/she will become (Potential).
Extremely timid and skeptical with low self-esteem, Gideon wouldn’t have looked, at least in people’s eyes, the best candidate as a leader. But God saw the potential in him and He mightily worked through him, granting Israel a great victory (with only 300 solders) against a great army (135,000 men!) of the enemy.
His own brothers looked down and sold him as a slave to Egypt, but God saw potential in Joseph and He greatly used him to save his family, without whom the nation of Israel would not have existed.
Even his own father and brothers didn’t believe him, a poor shepherd boy, but God knew what He had placed in him, and the history (His Story) shows how far God’s given potential could take a person, if one is willing to walk on it.
When I see people, I often lack this perspective 3) and instead quickly judge him/her, only based on what I already see. But our family is who we are now, only thanks to God’s grace and because of people who granted me/us the perspective 3), risking the possibility that I/we might betray their trust and kindness.
I thank the Lord Jesus for Mrs. A, and whenever I recall her, I am reminded not to forget the perspective 3), because that’s how our loving God sees us.

私たちが一時帰国・教会訪問を始めてから、1か月が経ちました。これまで体調崩さず予定していた6つの教会を訪問することができたことを、決して当たり前のこととは思っていません。残すところ、あと3教会です。（2週間ほど続いているサチのお腹の不調を、主がいやしてくださるようお祈りください。）
日本とインドネシアで神の家族との再会を果たせたことは、私たちに大きな慰めと励ましを与えてくれました。それぞれ異なる場所から来て、異なる場所に遣わされているけれども、同じ主に仕え、同じ宣教の働きに携わっているのだということが改めて思い起こされ、勇気をもらいました。
インドネシアから日本に戻ってまもなく、私たちの母教会のAさんが亡くなられたという知らせが届き、寂しさと悲しさが交差する数日が過ぎました。Aさんは元客室乗務員で、第二次世界大戦後の日本のイメージ向上に大きく貢献された方でした。また、私たちの母教会に創設当初から関わってこられた、数少ないメンバーのお一人でもありました。
私たちがヨーロッパへの召命を公にした当初、多くの人がまだ半信半疑な中で、Aさんは最初から応援してくださいました。ご自宅に招いてくださり、ご自身の信仰と派遣教会の歩みを分かち合ってくださったこと、食事に呼んでくださり、いろんなお話を聞かせてくださったこと、今でも鮮明に覚えています。
インドネシアへ出発する直前、私たち家族は入院されているAさんを訪ね、直接お話しし、一緒にお祈りすることができました。そして、「約一ヶ月の教会訪問を終えたら、また会いに来ます」と約束しました。その約束をこの地上で果たすことは、もうできなくなってしまいましたが、その一方で、天国をより楽しみに待ち望む理由がまた一つ増えました。
Aさんのことを思うと、次の御言葉が心に浮かびます。
「私は勇敢に戦い抜き、走るべき道のりを走り終え、信仰を守り通しました。あとは、義の栄冠が私のために用意されているだけです。その日には、正しいさばき主である主が、それを私に授けてくださいます。私だけでなく、主の現れを慕い求めている人には、だれにでも授けてくださるのです。」― 2テモテ4章7–8節
Aさんのような方々に心から感謝しています。Aさんご自身が勇敢に戦われただけでなく、同じ道を歩もうとしている後輩たちを支えてくださったからです。
今、宣教の最前線で仕えることができていることを、大きな特権だと感じています。しかし、上記したように、私たちが公に宣教の計画やプロジェクトを公表した際、まだ多くの人が半信半疑だった時にも、私たちを信じて支えてくださった神の家族がいなければ、そのすべては決して実現しませんでした。
このことを通して、人の何を見るべきかについて、大切な教訓を教えられています。人を見るときには、三つの視点、あるいは三つの段階があるのではないかと思います。
1）その人が「今、どのような人であるか（現状）」
2）その人が「これまで何をしてきたか（実績）」、そして
3）その人が「これから、どのような人になっていくのか（可能性）」
私たちの多くは、最初の二つの側面から人を判断しがちです。「彼は感じのいい人そうだから、友達になりたい。」「彼女はこの仕事に必要な学歴や職歴を持っているから、きっとこの仕事ができるだろう。彼女を雇おう。」
けれども、もう一つの見方があります。3）その人が、これからどのような人になり、どんなことを成し遂げる可能性を秘めているのか。
非常に臆病で、人を疑いやすく、自尊心も低かったギデオンは、人の目から見れば、少なくともリーダーとして最適な人物には見えなかったでしょう。しかし神は、彼の内にある可能性をご覧になりました。そして主は彼を大いに用い、わずか300人の兵士で、13万5千人もの敵軍に対してイスラエルに大勝利を与えられました。
ヨセフは、自分の兄たちから見下され、奴隷としてエジプトに売られてしまいました。しかし神はヨセフの内にある可能性をご覧になり、彼を大いに用いて、その家族を救われました。ヨセフがいなければ、イスラエル民族は消滅していたかもしれません。
ダビデもまた、父や兄たちからも期待されなかった、貧しい羊飼いの少年でした。しかし神は、彼の内に何を備えられたのかをご存じでした。そして歴史―すなわち「神が紡がれる物語（His Story）」―は、神が人の内に与えられた可能性が、その人が神と共に歩むなら、どこまでその人を導いていくことができるのかを示しています。
人を見るとき、僕はこの 3）の視点をしばしば欠いてしまい、今目に見えているものだけを基準に、その人を判断してしまいます。けれども、今の僕ら家族があるのは、神の恵みのおかげであり、そして、私たちを信じ、3）の視点を持って私たちと接してくださった人々がいたからです。もしかしたら、私たちがその信頼や親切を裏切ってしまう可能性もあったにもかかわらず、それでも信じてくださった方々がいたからです。
主イエスさまにAさんを心から感謝します。そしてAさんのことを思い出すたびに、人を見るときに、「その人が今どうあるか」だけでなく、「その人がこれからどうなっていくのか」―この3番目の視点を決して忘れてはいけないと教えられています。それは私たちの愛する神さまが、私たちをご覧になっている視点ですから。
