When I was little, my dream was to become a concrete mixer truck driver. But deep down, I actually had a different dream. At some point, I realized that dream could never come true, so I settled for the one I mentioned first.

My true dream was to become either Kamen Rider Black or Red Mask from Maskmen. I grew up in an environment where Christianity was almost non-existing, so noone could tell me, whether those heroes were good or bad from a spiritual point of view (many Japanese anime and manga contain things that are spiritually unhealthy). But to the 3-5 year-old me, these two heroes were the greatest examples of justice that I ever knew.

My parents bought me a transformation belt, and every day I practiced transforming into Kamen Rider with all my might (like in the video below). I would run out into the garden and fight imaginary enemies day after day. No matter how badly beaten up (in imagination) I got up again, I always won in the end—just like Kamen Rider Black. I even got the soundtrack CD and memorized the theme song by heart. (When my wife and I went to karaoke together for the first time, I passionately sang the song without caring at all that she looked completely stunned and puzzled.) Fighting was part of my everyday life as a little boy.

And isn’t that true for many boys around the world? Even across different countries and cultures, heroes like Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman continue to be loved generation after generation because there is something deeply shared in us: the desire to fight for justice, to protect innocent people, and to defeat evil. Where does this “DNA” come from? Could it not come from God our Creator?

As boys grow older, however, they begin to learn what the world calls “the reality”: “Fighting alone for justice is pointless—sometimes it only causes you problems.” “Evil is so deeply rooted in society and the world that there is nothing you can do about it.” “Peace is what we should pursue, and fighting itself is bad and wrong.” Furthermore, various life experiences can leave our hearts feeling down, hurt or traumatised, causing us to withdraw into ourselves. Certainly, as Matthew 5 and Hebrews 12 teach, peace is something we should pursue, but in a world filled with evil, there are times when fighting cannot be avoided if peace is to be attained. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)

When we read the Bible, we see that what is happening in the spiritual realm is, in many ways, a conflict or a battle between God and Satan. Of course, Satan is not equal to God; under God’s sovereignty, Satan’s rebellion and deception are only temporarily permitted. Passages like Exodus 14:14 and Romans 8:31 show us that God fights for His people. And what else could we name what Jesus accomplished on the cross, if not a “ fight” or “battle”? Don’t we, who are created by this God, loved by Him, and adopted into His family, share that same DNA?

According to one survey, around 70% of pastors in the United States said they had struggled with pornography at some point in their lives, and around 20% said they are still struggling today. According to data from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan’s divorce rate was approximately 35% in 2019, while in France it was reportedly around 45% (INSEE, 2020). Every addiction and personal struggle people face is complex and cannot be reduced to a simple explanation. Yet underneath it all, we can still recognize the reality of human sin and the schemes of Satan.

When talking with older generations from different countries and ethnic groups around the world, one opinion that comes up not rarely is: “The younger generation—especially males—has become weaker. In times like these, perhaps we men need to learn again what it means to fight. The Bible uses very strong language when it tells us to “put to death” the sins of the flesh (Colossians 3:5, Romans 8:13, etc.). We should be willing to lay ourselves down to protect our wives, children, and families. We should devote ourselves to the good of our communities and fight for the Kingdom of God as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Satan is active. If we do nothing against it, there is no such thing as maintaining the status quo. If we do not fight, we decline.

But many men have forgotten how to fight. Past experiences and wounds and hurts of the heart have locked the warrior in you inside a prison. We want to recover our hearts in God and become men who fight for what is good.

A major turning point in realizing the importance of fighting, and the need to listen closely to the state of my heart, was the Wild at Heart Men’s Retreat I attended in the Netherlands a few months ago. And now, for the very first time, this retreat is coming to Japan!

Together with John Eldredge; the bestselling author of Wild at Heart and his team, a four-day retreat will be held for men to restore their hearts and rediscover the identity God has given them. コンクリートミキサー車の運転手になることが小さい時の夢でした。でも実は心の深いところには、もっと違う夢があったのです。いつだったかその夢は叶わないと現実を知ったので、前述の夢に落ち着いたわけです。

心からの夢は何だったかいうと、仮面ライダーBlackかマスクマンのレッドマスクになることでした。僕はキリスト教とは無縁の環境で育ったので、先述のヒーローたちが霊的な観点からどうかということはわかりませんが（日本のアニメや漫画には信仰的に好ましくないものがたくさんあるのは事実です）、３〜５歳の僕が知っていた最も正義に溢れる存在はこの2人だったのです。変身ベルトを買ってもらい、仮面ライダーなるために変身を毎日一所懸命練習しました（上記ビデオのように）。庭に出ては、日々架空の敵と戦い、ボコボコにされながらも、最後はいつも勝利しました−仮面ライダーBlackのように。CDを買ってもらい、主題歌は丸暗記。（妻と初めて行ったカラオケでその主題歌を熱唱して、ポカーンとされてもおかまいなしです。）戦うことは、幼児の僕の日常だったのです。これは、世界中多くの男の子に言えることではないでしょうか。国は違っても、スパイダーマンやバットマン、スーパーマンが世代を超えて愛されるのは、「正義のために戦う」「人を守る」「悪を倒す」という、共通したDNAが流れているからだと思います。

このDNAはどこから来ているのか…創造者なる神さまからではないでしょうか？しかし成長するに連れて、幼い男の子は“現実”を知ります。「正義のために1人が戦っても無駄、むしろ損することもある。悪は詫びこっているんだから、もうどうしょうもない。」「平和が求めるべきもので、戦うことは悪」とさえ教えられます。また、さまざまな人生経験によって心が落ち込んだり、傷ついたり、あるいはトラウマを負ったりして、殻に閉じこもってしまうこともあります。確かにマタイ5章やヘブル12章にあるように、平和は追求すべきものです。しかし悪に満ちたこの世界で、平和を得るためには、時に『戦う』ことは避けて通れません。「悪に負けてはいけません。むしろ、善をもって悪に打ち勝ちなさい。」（ローマ12章21節）

聖書を読むと、今霊的な世界で起こっていることは、神とサタンの対立・戦いといえます。もちろん、サタンが神と対等に争っているわけではなく、神の主権のもとで、サタンの反逆と欺きが一時的に許されている状態です。出エジプト記 14章14節やローマ8章31節から、神は私たちのために戦ってくださる存在であることがわかります。十字架上でのイエスさまがなさったことを『戦い』と言わず、なんというのでしょうか？この神さまに造られ、愛され、子ども、家族とされた私たちには同じDNAが流れているのではないでしょうか？

ある調査によると、アメリカの牧師先生の約７割が人生のどこかの時点でポルノの問題に苦しみ、約２割が現在も苦しんでいると回答しました。厚生労働省のデータによると日本の離婚率は約35%（2019年）、フランスに至っては約45％だそうです（フランス国立統計経済研究所データ：INSEE 2020年）。人が陥るどんな中毒も問題も複雑で一筋縄ではいきません。しかしながら、根底には「人の罪」または「サタンの企み」が関係していると言えます。

世界の様々な国や民族の年配世代と話をすると、しばしば「若い世代、特に男性が弱くなった」という声を聞きます。このような時代ですから、男性は『戦うこと』を学び直すべきではないでしょうか？聖書（コロサイ3章5節、ローマ8章13節など）は、体から出てくる罪を殺せと強い表現で勧めます。私たちは、愛する妻や子ども、そして家族を守るために、体を張るべきです。地域社会の益のために尽力したり、地の塩・世の光として神の国のために戦うべきです。サタンはアクティブですから、対抗せず何もしなければ、現状維持はありません。戦わなければ衰退します。

でも、多くの男性が戦うことを忘れてしまった。過去の経験や心の傷が、あなたの内にいる戦士を牢獄に閉じ込めています。私たちは、神にあって心を取り戻し、良いことのために戦う者でありたい思います。

戦うことの重要性、心の状態に耳を傾ける必要性に気が付く大きな転機となったのは、数ヶ月前にオランダで参加した Wild at Heart Men’s Retreat（ワイルドアトハート　男性リトリート）でした。そしてこの度、そのリトリートが初めて日本にやって来ます！
