New school term/新学期

In September, the new school term began in Austria, and Liana proudly started elementary school. Lior celebrated his twelfth birthday and commenced his second year of secondary school.

The Austrian summer holidays last nine weeks. While paradise for children, it presents a challenge for parents. This summer, both my wife and I participated as staff in various church events, which turned out to be a great blessing for both of us. At the same time, in addition to taking care of the children constantly at home, it was an exhausting summer.

During the final week of the summer holidays, seeking some refreshment, we travelled to Prague to visit sisters in Christ from the Czech Japanese Church. (For some time now, I/we have been regularly invited to give a sermon at Japanese churches in the Czech Republic and Switzerland.) The time spent with our sisters in faith in Prague refreshed both our hearts and bodies.

Shortly afterwards, my wife began experiencing pain and numbness on her left side, which intensified, so we decided to have her examined at the hospital. Tests revealed that her lumbar vertebrae, weakened by prolonged chemotherapy and treatment, had suffered a small fracture. While the fracture itself appears to be healing, the bone, having broken and fused in a position slightly displaced from its original alignment, may be compressing nearby nerves, causing the numbness and pain. Next week, she will have an MRI scan of her lower back to investigate further.

It has been a rather hectic start to the new term, but even amidst this, God is revealing His glory through ministry, church and our private lives. I will share more about that later. 9月、オーストリアでは新学期が始まり、理歩名は晴れて小学校に入学しました。理央は12歳の誕生日を迎え、中学2年生をスタートさせました。

オーストリアの夏休みは9週間あります。子どもにとってはパラダイスですが、親にとってはチェレンジな季節です。今年の夏は、夫婦共々さまざまな教会イベントにスタッフとして参加し、大変恵まれました。と同時に、いつも家にいる子どもたちの世話もあり、大変疲れました。

夏休みの最後の週、リフレッシュを兼ねて、チェコ日本語教会の姉妹を訪ねにプラハへ向かいました。（しばらく前から、チェコとスイスの日本語教会に呼んでいただき、礼拝メッセージ奉仕をしています。）プラハの信仰の姉妹との時間に、心も体もリフレッシュされました。

そんな矢先、妻が体の左側に痛みとしびれを覚え、強度が強まってきたので、病院で診てもらうことにしました。検査の結果、長い抗がん剤や治療のせいで骨粗鬆調になっていた腰の骨が少し折れていたことがわかりました。今は骨折は癒えつつあるようですが、一度折れて元ある位置よりズレてくっついた骨が近くの神経を圧迫してしびれや痛みを生じさせているのかもしれません。来週、腰のMRIを撮って調べてもらうことになりました。
