As I wrote in the previous update, realizing that I needed to break free from the deeply ingrained mindset of “results-oriented success” and instead redefine success as “being faithful to God” was a radical paradigm shift for me. The exhortation to the church in Smyrna, "Be faithful, even to the point of death" (Revelation 2), serves also as a direct word of encouragement for us living today. Alongside that realization, I’ve recently had another significant insight (for me), which I’d like to share today.
Before getting to that, over the past few months, there have been an increasing number of random viewers from countries like China and Iran, so I would like to write a brief message here.
If you are someone in a position of persecuting Christians or Christianity, please know this: God sees you and He sees your heart (Genesis 16:13, 1 Samuel 16:7). You will certainly die one day, and it is appointed for you to stand before God after physical death to face judgment (Hebrews 9:27). There is nothing more terrifying than rejecting Jesus Christ, persecuting those who believe in Him, and falling into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31).
God hates your sin because it separates you from the God who created you (Romans 6:16). Yet, God loves you (John 3:16). To rescue you from sin and death, Jesus Christ - who was without sin - gave up His life on the cross. He rose again on the third day and is now looking upon you with eyes of love (Romans 5:6-8). Please accept and welcome Jesus Christ into your life.
If you are my brothers and sisters in Christ who are living under persecution, please know this: I am praying for you. As Scripture says, I am praying that God will provide a way of escape for you (1 Corinthians 10:13). Nothing can separate you from the love of God. In the Lord, you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:35–39). Many brothers and sisters in Christ around the world are praying for you and serving people like you, who are fighting the good fight of faith under persecution. Please refer to the websites:

Now, back to the topic.
When thinking about serving God, until recently my focus had been primarily on people outside the church. Roughly 40% of the world's population is considered “unreached” — people who have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If someone has heard the Gospel and yet chooses to reject it, I can somehow understand that. However, the fact that so many have never heard it, or never even had the chance to hear it, is something I still consider to be the greatest injustice and unfairness.
Regions where evangelism is especially difficult are often referred to as the “10/40 Window” (including the Middle East, North Africa, China, and North Korea). Yet it is said that about 97% of the world’s pastors and missionaries work outside this 10/40 Window, and roughly 99% of global church mission budgets are spent outside it. In other words, only 3% of Christian workers serve in the regions where the gospel is least accessible, and only 1% of mission funding is directed there.
Additionally, as one’s Christian life becomes longer, it is easier to fall into the trap of spending private time only with people inside the church. Because of these, I have intentionally spent time to building relationships with people outside the church and from the unreached areas. I used to think, “someone else can take care of the people inside the church”, but through several recent experiences, I have come to rethink this view.
Interestingly, the Bible does not explicitly command parents to love their children. This is because, in a sense, it is natural for a parent to love their own children. However, the Bible is full of teachings and exhortations for believers to love one another and be in unity. Perhaps this is because the Lord knows how difficult that can be at times.
There is an notable statistic about why missionaries leave their mission field. The two biggest reasons are health issues and relationship/interpersonal problems with fellow missionaries or believers. It seems missionaries can be very gracious toward “outsiders”, but find it difficult to treat “insiders” (colleagues, church staff, etc.) with that same love. As a result, conflict erupts. The same can be said of relationships between churches or among pastors. Even within the same denomination, churches may envy one another, speak ill of each other, or prevent their congregations from interacting.
As we can see from the example of Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15), not all disagreements or separations are necessarily bad. God can even use such a messy situation to advance His work and His plans, including the spread of the gospel. However, the fact that Mark, who was the cause of the dispute, and Paul later reconciled (2 Timothy 4:11), and that Paul and Barnabas who once clashed intensely also likely reconciled or at least overcame bitterness (1 Corinthians 9:6), shows how important relationships among “those inside” are to the Lord.
Charles Spurgeon, one of the most influential preachers in Christian history, was once asked, “Which is more important for spiritual growth: reading the Bible or praying?” He answered the question with a question: “When you breathe, which is more important—breathing in or breathing out?” The same could be said for our relationships with those outside the church and those within. Both are equally important.
Jesus also prayed: “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.“ (John 17:20-21)
When we believers, despite differences in nationality, language, culture, background and opinions, etc., come to be united in the Lord through both God’s grace and human effort (fully acknowledging how difficult this can be), that unity becomes a powerful testimony to a world that does not know God, and the Lord uses it as a means to lead lost souls to Jesus Christ.
As the new year begins, I want to hold this truth close to my heart and continue walking in faith. To our brothers and sisters in the Lord: my wife and I still have many areas of immaturity and are far from perfect, but if you extend your grace to us and tell us in love and truth of our blind spots, we would greatly appreciate it. 前回のアップデートで記したように、長年骨の隅々にまで刷り込まれてきた『成果主義』から脱却して、『神に忠実であること』を成功の定義とする、という気づきは僕にとって、抜本的なパラダイムシフトとなりました。「死に至るまで忠実であれ」（黙示録2章）というスルミナの教会へ対する奨励は、そのまま今を生きる私たちへの励ましの言葉です。先の気づきと並び、最近もう一つ（僕にとって）大きな気づきがありましたので、今日はそれをシェアします。
その前に、ここ数ヶ月、中国やイランなどから不特定多数の閲覧者があるので、ここで少しメッセージを書かせてください。
もしあなたが、クリスチャンやキリスト教を迫害している立場の人なら、知ってください。神はあなたとあなたの心を見ておられます。（創世記16章13節、1サムエル16章7節）あなたはいつか必ず死にますが、肉体の死後、その神の御前に立ち、裁きを受けることが決まっています。（ヘブル人9章27節）イエス・キリストを拒み、彼を信じる人を迫害し、生ける神の手の中に陥ることほど恐ろしいことはありません。（ヘブル10章31節）神は、あなたの罪を憎んでおられます。罪はあなたを、あなたを創られた神から引き離すからです。（ローマ6章16節）神は、あなたを愛しておられます。（ヨハネ３章16節）あなたを罪と死から救い出すために、罪のないイエス・キリストが十字架上でいのちを投げ出してくださいました。3日目によみがえられ、今あなたを愛の眼差しで見ておられます。（ローマ5章6-8節）イエス・キリストをあなたの人生に迎えてください。

さて、本題に戻ります。
神に仕えることを考える時、僕は最近まで教会の外にいる人にフォーカスしてきました。世界人口のおよそ40%が未伝、イエスキリストの福音が伝わっていない現実があります。福音を聞いて、それでも拒否するならまだわかりますが、一度も聞いたことがない、聞くチャンスがないというのは、最大の不当、不公平だと（今でも）考えています。特に福音宣教が難しい地域を10/40ウィンドー（窓）（中東や北アフリカ、中国や北朝鮮がそれにあたる）と呼びますが、世界の牧師や宣教師の97%は、この10/40ウィンドー以外の地域で活動しており、また世界の教会の宣教予算の99%は10/40ウィンドー以外の地域で使われているそうです。つまり、もっとも福音が届いていない地域には、世界中の働き人の3%しか従事しておらず、宣教予算の1%しか利用されていません。
また、クリスチャン歴が長くなると、教会の中にいる人とだけプライベートな時間を過ごす罠に陥ります。ですから、僕は今まで福音が届いていない地域の人、教会の外の人との関係構築に、意識的に時間を費やしてきました。「教会の中の人は誰か他の人に任せればいい」という考えがありましたが、昨今、いくつかの出来事を通して、この考えを改めるに至りました。（誰かと喧嘩や衝突したわけではありません。）
聖書には、親に対して、子どもを愛するようにという直接的な命令や教えがありません。親が自分の子どもを愛するのは、ある意味自然だからです。でも、聖書には、信徒同士が互いに愛し合い、一致しなさいという教えや勧めが多々出てきます。それが難しいことを主はご存知だからではないでしょうか。
興味深い統計があります。宣教師が宣教地を離れる原因についてです。最大の原因は、健康上の問題と他宣教師や信仰者との人間関係の問題だそうです。宣教師は、「外の人」には恵み深く接するのですが、「内に人」（同僚の宣教師や教会スタッフなど）に同じように愛を持って接するのは難しいということです。そして当然のように問題が勃発します。また、教会間や牧師先生たちの間でも同じことが言えます。同じ教団に属していても、他の教会を妬んだり、悪口や陰口を言い、信徒同士を交流させないなんてこともあるのです。
パウロとバルナバの例（使徒15章）からもわかるように、考えの不一致や分裂がすべて悪いということではありません。そのような厄介事をも用いて神はご自分の御業やご計画（宣教の拡大）を進められます。しかし、分裂の原因となったマルコとパウロは後に和解し（2テモテ4章11節）、激しく衝突したパウロとバルナバも後に和解したのではないか（少なくとも嫌悪感や苦々しい思いを克服したのでは）と想像できる（1コリント9章6節）ことからも、主なる神にとって、『内の人同士の関係』は非常に大切なことがわかります。
チャールズ・スポルジョン（キリスト教史上、最も影響力のあるメッセンジャーの一人）はかつて、「霊的成長のためにより重要なのは、聖書を読むことですか、それとも祈ることですか」と尋ねられました。彼はその問いに、別の問いで答えました。「呼吸をするとき、どちらがより重要でしょうか――息を吸うことですか、それとも吐くことですか？」同じことは、教会の外にいる人々との関係と、教会の内にいる人々との関係についても言えるでしょう。どちらも同じぐらい大切です。
イエスさまも祈られました。「わたしは、ただこの人々のためだけでなく、彼らのことばによってわたしを信じる人々のためにも、お願いします。父よ。あなたがわたしのうちにおられ、わたしがあなたのうちにいるように、すべての人を一つにしてください。彼らもわたしたちのうちにいるようにしてください。あなたがわたしを遣わされたことを、世が信じるようになるためです。」ヨハネ17章20-21節
私たち信仰者が、国籍・言語・文化・背景・見解等と超え、神の恵みと人の努力により主にあって一致する時（これが時に大変なのは重々承知の上です）、それが神を知らない世界で大きな証しとなり、失われた魂をイエス・キリストに導く手段として用いられる。新しい年の幕開けに、このことを胸に刻み、信仰の歩みを進めたいと思います。クリスチャンの皆さん、まだまだ未熟なところがある私たち夫婦ですが、イエス・キリストにあって、どうぞよろしくお願いします。
